2014 Moderator Election

A moderator works for the community and its consensus, and I hereby volunteer to work for ours.

For the most part, a Stack Exchange moderator's job isn't moderation per se. It's explaining to new folks how it works (its not a forum), cleaning up obsolete comments, sorting through the complaints pile (flags), and being an example for the community—everything he does has that diamond after it.

There are of course the occasional issues that come up. I believe conversation should be the first tool to resolve those disputes; the hammer, the last. Of course, a dispute doing harm to the site must be stopped, and I won't be timid in doing so.

Our site is currently in very good shape and as a moderator I will work to continue that. The main thing our current moderator team lacks is manpower—not to keep up, but to provide round-the-clock coverage. As you've no doubt noticed, I keep weird hours and am pretty easily pingable on chat, so I think I can help with that.

I'm fairly familiar with how Stack Exchange works, having started with Stack Overflow in October '08, and I've been a regular here for about two years. I keep up with goings on network wide and of course on our own meta.

I am interested in stepping up to wield the moderator hammer. You have probably seen me around as I have dropped an answer or two. I'm almost always knee deep in Linux including a little over a decade of contributions to distro development and assorted FOSS projects. I know how folks in the field are and have learned to get along with them.

I also have a bit of experience with the SE network and how proper moderation makes it tick. Being a regular user on U&L was how I first fell in love with the QnA format (and still somewhere I end up nearly every day) but I have other experience with SE as well. I have been appointed as a protem moderator on two sites; one of which has since graduated and I was subsequently elected by the community to continue moderating. If a religious oriented SE site can put up with my moderation I hope I won't be too much trouble here.

I generally agree with the current site policies and moderator actions and see no need for any radical changes—I am only offering to carry some of the load so this site maintains a high signal to noise ratio and remains a valuable resource for experts.:wq

As some of you may know the story of how I came to be here, it started with a dare. Several co-workers who've known me for over a decade knew that I've lived and breathed Linux & Unix for many many years. These co-workers did not think I could get to 3k on this site. At each level they would buy me free lunches. I recently got my free lunch at 75k 8-).

And now U&L is part of my daily rituals, and I can't fathom not having it that way. This site is truly one of the nicest communities that I've ever been a part of and I would be honored to be a moderator. As many of you can attest, I already do a lot of the editing, reviewing, & helping both new and old users, and I'd like to make this role a more formal one.

This is a bit late, but I've been extra busy since nominations opened and I hate writing about myself so I was hoping for a good field of candidates. While I have great respect for most of the candidates, I'm not satisfied with enough of the field as moderators so I've decided it's worth the effort to write up this nomination.

I've been around this site for 2 years and 8 months, and I've thoroughly enjoyed it here. The community here moderates itself very well; there's a reason this is the first election in over three years despite its size and growth. If you happen to notice my lessened activity the last few months, rest assured I have still been visiting nearly every day.

I am an elected moderator on Science Fiction & Fantasy and moderator pro-tempore on The Great Outdoors and Puzzling. If you want to know how I am as a moderator, just pop into the chat rooms for those sites and ask my users (or just drop by to talk with me or the others). I suggest Mos Eisley, as it's quite active. As for the inevitable question of whether I have time for another site, yes. There's always room for another site, unless one of them is SO. :x

I'd also like to nominate myself for one of the two open janitorial positions. I have come to love this community and the way it works and would like to be a larger part of that.

As far as the moderation style is concerned, I think our current mods have done a great job and would try to continue in the same vein. I feel that a moderator's most important job apart from the janitorial workload is to moderate and to do so with moderation. I believe my record shows that I am both polite and patient with new (and old) users, two very important traits for a moderator to have.

If elected I will wield my hammer (or perhaps my hoe) with, well, moderation. I will strive to make this both a welcoming place for new users and a useful resource for the experts. A thin line to tread but I will do my best.

Well, first I don't have a predilect editor, I normally pick what I have at hand :/.

I take pride on being responsible of my actions, being fair and reasonable when taking them, and always think in the well being of the community. I strongly abide by the rules (if they exist) and try to bring forth the problems (or possible problems) I see need to be addressed. I am always willing to help, as long as they are willing to be helped.

I try to prevent bad things from happening, since is always better that we don't reach the point where everyone get a bitter felling. I'm difficult to be offended through I always ask respect.

I feel that there's always room for improvement, since we can always try to be better.

Sorry, my nomination is late, but I feel that some options are not correctly covered with the current roster of people (which I respect) and I would like to mend it.
