This is a rather simplistic view typical of Linux (or should I say Ubuntu?); the OpenBSD way is to have more partitions, not fewer.

@NateLockwood: ntpd checks the server as often as needed: You don't have to tell it the interval. Please read the FAQ. The startup of ntpd is handled by your OS - typically it should "just work".
