comment Why does killall command kill only one instance of the process?
@bdowning agreed, it should only be used as a last resort.

comment What could be causing a delay between running passwd and being able to login with that password?
@Dan is this machine using NIS by any chance does ypwhich return anything? You said the users are local, but what if those users are shared over NIS? It sounds like you already looked at /etc/nsswitch.conf and said that files comes before winbind, but is anything before files?

comment How to monitor the opening and closing of files?
@turtleDev If you don't know where the files are, this can get messy since you definitely don't want to listen to /. Is it possible to assume $HOME? Or maybe you can look at directories opened by the music player process... I also think the lsof/psutil stuff that was discussed previously could work if you poll every N seconds, where N is much shorter than most songs.

comment xrandr not activating laptop display
Cool, glad it works! You are probably doing this already, but if you have xbacklight installed, you can add that after your xrandr command to flip the backlight on.

What about giving HDM1 --auto instead of --off? Sorry, hard for me to find what would work on your hardware :-/

comment urxvt - force column width
@Mikel I'm using awesome wm and I definitely agree that's what's going on, I'm just wondering if there's a way to make urxvt scale my font to fit a certain character length/width.
