comment How to migrate files on Linux from HDD to SSD on a VDS
Some applications don't like symlinks in certain contexts - e.g. opinting your document_root in apache to a symlink will result in lots of 404 errors if you've configure -FollowSymLinks. Further you may run into concurrency issues if the same file is accessed via different paths. NB I'm not saying this is not the way to fox the problem, just that there are hidden gremlins with symlinks.

comment Is it possbile to mount Windows filesystems without using the root account?
@binghenzq: they don't require the root password at the time of mounting. If you don't have root acces on the machine it's still possible to access an SMB filesystem (using smbclient) but it's not possible to mount any filesystem. If nobody knows the root password then your system is highly vulnerable and this MUST be resolved.

comment Massive, unpredictable I/O performance drop in Linux
Then the next thing on my lsit to check would be to check the logs for errors and check there's plenty of memory allocated to buffers/cache (see output of free)

comment Linux cache evictions
No - vfs_cache_pressure controls the ratio of meta data vs pagecache retention (at least according to the docs I've read and the experiments I've run)
