Thanks for the alternate tool recommendations. I'll have to decide if I want to buy a drive specifically for Time Machine or use on of these other tools. Do you happen to know if Time Machine will let my Macbook back up a hard drive that is always connected to my iMac?

comment Where does Mac OS X come from?
The title of this question should really be "Where does Mac OS X come from", as all versions of Mac OS prior to X are a completely different non-unix-based operating system.

comment Good distro for a VM?
If you need anything more advanced, you could make your own VM in SUSE Studio, which is probably the coolest thing on the planet.

comment Linux as a complete development platform?
Right, you could of course use OS X as your host OS and run Linux and Windows with VMware Fusion.

Hey that's cool, I didn't know you could do that. Very useful in cases where you can't use screen for whatever reason.

comment How do you free up resources in Ubuntu?
In fact, I'd expect that this question is not very Ubuntu-specific at all, and depending on the answers that tag might be something we could remove.

@itsmyown: I disagree with "this question belongs on ubuntu.stackexchange". Why would an ubuntu-specific question not be accepted on unix.stackexchange? We accept specific questions for every other *nix variant.

comment How do I add MP3/etc support to my *nix desktop?
By the way, I've intentionally left this question vague as to which specific *nix I mean, to test how well this sort of question works. If folks decide to close it and think a separate question for each *nix is more appropriate, that is fine. It would be kind of cool to have one resource that answers the question for all distros and OS's, though. :-)
