@gabe's suggestion totally works on OS X 10.6. I suspect you typed it wrong or something.

comment How can I get a count of files in a directory using the command line?
wc is a "word count" program. The -l switch causes it to count lines. In this case, it's counting the lines in the output from ls. This is the always the way I was taught to get a file count for a given directory, too.

comment What is the benefit of compiling your own linux kernel?
@Michael if it's an unverified assumption, I think replacing "considerably faster" with "potentially faster" in your answer might be a good idea...just to make sure no n00bs are misled. :-)

I'd argue that if you want to build your own kernel simply for the learning experience, that you do it with a source-based Linux distribution like Gentoo or Linux From Scratch. The Gentoo stage 2 install documentation is an excellent guide to understanding what it means to build Linux from the kernel up.

I agree with most of your answer, but I'd be curious for some hard facts on "considerably faster". I wouldn't want to give a new user the impression that their desktop will run generally faster with a hand-built kernel (from my experience with Gentoo, this is simply not true). Can you quantify the gains in boot speed?

comment Linux adoption path for a .NET developer
A useful resource for checking package popularity is: popcon.ubuntu.com . Note that ~90% of users have Mono installed. Compare this to 73% with ubuntu-desktop or 87% with gnome-panel (indicators of number of desktop users reporting in). Also compare to 64% with anything resembling Java.

comment Linux adoption path for a .NET developer
Recommending Python+Gtk+GNOME was good advice, but recommending Java seemed a poor choice considering the relatively poor library support on Linux. I also felt the anti-mono advice was phrased in an argumentative way. "not many like to have Mono" is simply false and would really need to be backed up by some hard facts. Just because the detractors are noisy does not mean they are a significant enough population to impact one's choice in development language. And it seems that most Mono haters have similar reservations about Java, anyway.

comment How can I (and should I) use my Linux file server as a Time Machine backup server for my Macs?
So, this is actually incorrect, I've found out. Time Machine over AFP is supported, as long as the machine serving AFP is running OS X. For details, see: docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/15139.html . You don't have to enable any secret preferences; it works out-of-the-box (I just tried it).
