comment Why would someone choose FreeBSD over Linux?
That was a few jobs ago. I'm not currently using it. I can't speak for my employer at the time.

That was a while ago. Given the time frame, probably CentOS or RHEL 4.

comment rsyslog drops messages excessively
I found some of my old emails. Here is a bit of an explanation as to why it's dropping packets - kb.monitorware.com/…. The problem is with reverse name resolution, and at some point the "-x" flag was introduced to turn off name resolution. In version 7, the bug is fixed so you can keep name resolution AND get your packets - blog.gerhards.net/2011/06/full-blown-dns-cache-for-rsyslog.html. The last post is from the blog of the author of rsyslog.

comment Can someone recommend a Linux Distro for purposes of just running a DNS?
The I'd say Ubuntu. It's a solid choice, good support on the web and active development. Good luck.

comment SFTP server on RHEL6 disconnects on ls
Apparently so. I copied the /etc/passwd and /etc/group to the chrooted environment, but it didn't help.

That's what I was doing. ls wasn't working in that scenario because of the likewise issue above.
