comment Identical MAC address on two different VM, yet I have internet connectivity
@Gilles. You are wrong. Two VMs using the same virtualization software on the same host can have different Ethernet links. Look at VMware Workstation Virtual Network Editor for an example.

comment Where are zsh and mksh incompatible with bash?
@DanL4096. Passing variables to shell scripts that then do not do sufficient sanity checking on the variables is no reason to throw out POSIX. The problem lies with the person that wrote the shell script in the first place.

comment Down single connection
By design, the only reliable way is to either terminate the process that opened the port or somehow get the process that opened the port to close the port.

comment I am trying to find a better/easier way to count alphabetic characters in a file or shell variable
@HalosGhost. I disagree. Unless asked by the OP, a concise reply is perfectly acceptable.

I never heard of that Unix convention. And your two references do not support your assertion about that convention.

comment Which runlevel is best for a Linux (Debian) server (DBMS/SCM)?
On Debian, runlevels 2-5 are equivalent. 1 is single-user and typicially your database or network will not be up when at runlevel 1

comment Why is the terminal case-sensitive?
Actually Windows filenames can be case-sensitive. They are in the POSIX subsystem for example and see msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee681827%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

comment Busybox `uname -r` shows wrong kernel version
Then somewhere within your compilation you are setting the kernel version to 3.1.9+

comment File system compatible with all OSes?
I agree. If you have to use a USB stick, FAT32 is really your only choice. Note that limits you to 4 Gb per partition.
