As a student in South Asian languages, culture and history, specialising in comparative cultures and cognitive science, I take special interest in the influence of cultural paradigms in the perception and interaction with the world in terms of development. I am also a polyglot with a strong passion for learning languages, including programming languages such as Python. Also I am firm supporter of unix and free software.

Yeah, but isn't it more a work-around than a solution?

comment How to create a “Turn Off Screen” Action?
For now I made a small executable bash script using the command line above, called screen-off which I moved to my /usr/bin. It shows now as an application rather as an action. I would still like to know where those "actions" are defined and fix this properly.

It seems the command line to turn off screen is xset dpms force off. See this link.

Ideally I want to do that with my keyboard.

It's a start. I suspect there must be somewhere some "action" launcher? Much like there are application launchers?

PS: I know the application:// or app:// from the use of zeitgeist, see: zeitgeist-project.com/docs/0.8.2/… .

Indeed if I enter file:///home/benjamin/my_file.txt, I can access and open that file. So only web browsers can read the URI? Or can I use these URIs from the terminal too?

@bdowning: the first link is excellent, it would be great if they'd tell how to get a fast boot too.

comment Can GRUB font size be customised?
OK, I see elsewhere the equivalent of update-grub is grub2-mkconfig -o /boot/grub2/grub.cfg.

Nice indeed I found this documentation but somehow I need to update-grub, which command I don't seem to have on Fedora 16 (?).

@fpmurphy: thanks. You're answer is quite succinct and I can't follow, could you make it a detailed answer? I don't know how to remove wl interfaces scanning from boot nor do I know how to boot the way you suggested.

comment How to make the terminal display user@machine in bold letters?
Nice, I added a new line before the [user@host] which makes each command yet more readable (it should be set so by default on terminal imo).

Thanks for this. I suppose I also had to copy all of the above in ~/.bashrc?

Nice and explanatory answer, +1. Still I found hesse's answer more to the point, so I chose it instead.
