comment Vim - buffer names in the cmd line area
Are you using some plugin for buffer management? By the way, you could also show us your vim settings.

comment Directory with +x permission, parents without it. When would this be useful?
Are you sure you're running chmod +grx -R /a/b/c/d/e/folder? It's wrong, the right way to execute it is: chmod g+rx -R /a/b/c/d/e/folder

comment Is there a way to store Firefox passwords in a local encrypted database in Linux?
And also, independently of the way the passwords are stored, they are also very insecure because they may be viewed directly going to: Edit -> Preferences -> Security -> Passwords -> Show passwords. That option is with Firefox 3.x and also with Firefox 4.

comment How to extend my desktop to a second connected screen
Simple: because not always Fn-F5 works, and with the method I described you can position just as you need the screens you are using. I have a link to that script in my desktop, so that when I have the external monitor attached to my laptop, I can easily set up the screens (without it, the system just enables the external monitor and shuts off the one of the laptop).

comment Which laptop is most compatible with Linux?
I agree with this comment. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad SL400 (the model with Intel graphics) running Xubuntu and the only thing that does not work is the card reader for XD cards, wich in fact is something that does not exist for linux at all (as far as I researched less than a year ago). Bluetooth, Wifi, brightness buttons, HDMI, etc... working perfectly.

comment How to copy text from vim to an external program?
Do you mean holding down the shift key when selecting text? That's the way I do it with xterm.

comment Set the key for spanish eñe letter
@fred: I use ubuntu in two different machines and in both of them I get six values for that command... I don't know why the difference with you. May be it doesn't depend on the distribution but it does according to other circumstances or settings...

comment Matlab gets “crazy” after type special characters
I've just tested, and ś and other special characters do no harm to the matlab session. In particular, ś prints just E. About the stty sane command, it doesn't restore the original settings, but stty -istrip does. Very good is the option to negate a command in stty just by prepending a -. Thanks again!

comment Matlab gets “crazy” after type special characters
Your radical solution worked. With stty istrip, matlab receives those characters, and for "ñ" it prints C1... I don't need the special characters inside Matlab, but by accident they sometimes get pressed. So, this is a very good solution, and one that I didn't find anywhere else. Thanks!

comment Matlab gets “crazy” after type special characters
When this problem happens I loose control of Matlab, because the prompt behaves as it should when the Enter key gets stuck. The only option is to suspend session (CTRL-z) and then kill the process.
