comment Can emacs use gpg-agent in a terminal at all?
The pinentry package help says: "NOTE: As of June 2015, this feature requires newer versions of GnuPG (2.1.5+) and Pinentry (not yet released, possibly 0.9.5+). For details, see the discussion on gnupg-devel mailing list: <lists.gnupg.org/pipermail/gnupg-devel/2015-May/…; So I've not managed to get this to work yet but shall try again soon!

Sure -- It's on here because I don't think emacs.stackexchange.com existed when I asked the question :)

comment What are processes “[123.45.78.901-ma]” on linux, where the number is an NFS server's IP address?
(If I'd managed to make it repeatable and it wasn't on something in production then I would have investigated more and put a bug in, but I didn't have specific enough info to do so at the time)

It being a kernel bug was a guess -- it looks very much like the NFS processes get stuck in kernel-space (I don't have it to hand now but there was a kernel trace in the logs if I remember correctly...). Also I had several machines with slightly different kernel versions and only one particular version showed up this problem for me. I don't have the exact kernel version noted either, but it was happening for me on CentOS 7 hosts with a couple of patch-levels behind the latest kernel version at the time... Sorry nothing more specific than that! :s

comment rsync all files of remote machine over SSH without root user?
This is one of the better solutions as it doesn't need any reconfiguration on the other end -- just needs the askpass installed and X forwarding enabled, both of which should be fairly common.

comment Preseed.cfg ignoring host setting
I've also used this but with a slight modification so that the hostname is automatically set from a DNS lookup: d-i pressed/late_command string in-target /bin/bash -c 'echo $(dig +short -x $(facter ipaddress)) | sed -e \'s/\.$//\' > /etc/hostname'. This uses "facter" from puppetlabs to get the IP address but you could do something similar using ip addr and sed.

@Mike ext4 is fine on ppc (at least at the time of writing, which is quite a bit later than your comment)
