comment How do I create a separate partition for my /home directory?
+1 for a good summary. Just want to add that, while I agree that having lots of partitions is more hassle that it's worth, having /home on a separate partition is really solid advice, imo, almost a no-brainer. For a single user workstation (laptop or desktop), I will have 1 or more OS partitions, and throw all the remaining space into /home.

comment Easily updatable troubleshooting LiveUSB distro
X11 autoconfigures in modern versions, and while fstab does not, it's not a big obstacle. To be honest, the most trouble I've gone to with my crunchbang usb stick is to write a script which writes my .conkyrc on the fly to reflect different hardware configurations.

+1 - this is 100% correct, and I don't see any room for disagreement here.

comment Default configuration I need to change?
hmm, well then I apologise! it will go crazy if root's ~/.ssh folder is world-readable, for example. If Debian ships with /root as 755, and tiger doesn't warn about it, I would take that as a decent indication that it's not an unreasonable setting to operate with.

comment How can I get wireless and ethernet to work with ubuntu?
it might also be worth noting that Broadcom have committed to open-sourcing the drivers for their wireless chipsets (thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.kernel.wireless.general/55418) and so this situation can be expected to improve considerably over the next year or so :)
