Italian, living in Madrid, Spain; teacher of electronics at higher education since 1994, user of Unix since 1989 and of Linux as soon as it existed (kernel 0.99pl8, or something like that, SLS distribution on 40 floppies...), user of TeX/LaTeX since even before (on a VAX/VMS!) and hobbist photographer with a geeky side.

comment Why is my PC freezing while I'm copying a file to a pendrive?
In my 14.04 installation, uname -a returns 3.13.0-32-generic, so yes. But I have not checked if the patch for the issue was finally integrated in the kernel or not. I have a 16GB machine and it seems to work ok without the workaround, although I have to say that I didn't try with especially slow devices.

@becko Writing "0" in the two pseudofiles above should reset the thing as it was before. Notice that since kernel 3.13 the above workaround should not be needed.

It is now in standard kernels for Ubuntu from 14.04 upward. The exact command to use (in my case) is: libata.force=2.00:disable.

comment Linux Fedora 20:How to use microsoft word, possibly with wine?
As an aside, I use Crossover (it is a commercially-supported version of Wine) and Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) work just ok too. (Not related to them --- just a happy client).

comment Alias from .bash_profile is not reflected across the system
You can't export an alias (FWIK); aliases are local to the current shell. You can export environment variables only.

comment How to understand the unix time format?
I suggest that it should be noticed that Unix time is absolute, while my "3pm today" can be very different from your "3pm today"... depending on $TZ.

The generic term "path" has nothing to do to the shell variable PATH which contains a list of paths were executables can be found, separated by colons.
