comment Unable to boot the operating system
@xralf: as pointed out in post #4 of the ubuntu forums this is a bug of the mini cd, have you tried editing your config according to that posting?

Can you explain what problem you are talking about? Aligning partitions to cylinders is not reccommended, not only parted will hate you for doing so.

no need to post fstab, it is loaded after the kernel and thus after the bootmanager is loaded, which in this case is not loaded. question is if there were any erros while installing grub @xralf?

comment Fast distro which only allows a USB boot?
It should be possible to chainload from one Grub the other Grub on the USB. But I have no experience with that.

comment pendrive distro
@oneat substitute everything with the pendrives device path (or even better UUID). I am booting my server from a pendrive, would be no problem to put the rest of the system on it too. I would reccomend using genkernel if you want to switch your host-PC though.

+1 for gentoo. I don't know of any premade USB-distro that is made to run on a stick. But you should be able to install every distro onto a USB-Stick. And gentoo is extremely lightweight if you use the "minimal" USE-flag for some packages. An alternative might be Archlinux if you don't want to dive too deep into your system.

comment What's a good example of piping commands together?
@FakeRainBrigand: Haha, good to know! But I got an alternative that should not be built in: youtube-dl $1 -q -o - | mplayer - directly plays the video inside mplayer. I use that command from my laptop to tell my server (which is connected to the TV) to play videos. I have to append -display :0.0 -geometry 400x300+1200+200 to let the mplayer window appear on the correct screen.

Yes, but they are only "bool" so no more options than on/off. I think the problem is somewhere else. I will try to get my hands on a headset tomorrow.

well playing around does not seem to change anything but all S/PDIF channels are set to off. But activating them did not help.
