comment What does “are you root?” mean?
@reirab I think that sudo -i is preferred though, since it respects your current shell.

comment Why do many commands provide a “quiet” option?
Not all commands use -q to suppress all output. For example, Docker has a command to list images; docker images shows a formatted table with a bunch of information, while docker images -q outputs a plain list of image IDs (useful for piping to other commands).

comment Using more command
There's also most, which may or may not be installed your local Linux machine. It includes a nice status bar and will decompress gzip'd files automatically.

comment Why isn't there a truly unified package manager for Linux?
For the exact same reason we don't want a single distribution - I like the way my distro does it. If you don't, then you're free to use another or write your own. Before you know it, you have as many package managers as you do programmers.

comment Object-oriented shell for *nix
It's technically now at "fishshell.com". A 3 character change is too small to make externally, but it decreases the linkyness of the answer.

comment What is Unix now?
I think that the SCO-Linux Controversies, have somewhat quieted since suing IBM and Novell has largely failed. SCO, according to the Tenth Circuit's report, was rejected from appealing the case and the court ruled in favor of Novell.

comment What is the difference between /etc and /usr/local/etc
Any reason not to put it directly under /etc/myapp? If I were looking to change a config, it'd be the first place I would look.
