comment How to check programatically if the Ethernet cable is plugged in?
@MJA Are you sure one can use a ping to 127.0.1 (localhost) as an indicator of the cable being pluged? Afaik it will fall to the default loopback and not even go to see the eth inferfaces. In this sense it is woth taking a look here: stackoverflow.com/questions/929368/…

Have you saved the file in different systems? Can it be a CRLF/LFCR discrepancy?

comment Why are some files and folders hidden?
@Question Overflow well now its my opinion ahead. :) /etc/ are config files mostly which should be changed ie they are where the configurations are set.

comment Why are some files and folders hidden?
look the second answer. The reason for those files you listed are either they are config files which should not be changed daily and are always present as .ssh and .bash_profile so you don't wanna know they are there. It is just a convention. Files at spool are temp files same as many of the others you listed so they should not be edited manually hence they are hidden

comment install kernel headers without overwriting old headers
@OP which distro do you use? At least ubuntu variants keep the old kernel automatically. So I assume this is at least a bit distro dependent.
