No i don't have GNOME or KDE installed, just the core xorg packages which is enough to generate dialog boxes from the command line using something like zenity.

If xorg is a graphical desktop, then yes, I have that installed. I then type startx and still end up on the command line, but the resolution of the text changes to show smaller text on the command line. I installed it recently in the hope that it might help resolve this issue. When you say classical switches, do you mean - instead of /?

I installed xorg, doesn't that give me a local xdestkop?

It's a problem because a new window is not being generated on my computer which allows me to control a graphical RDS desktop session.

Thanks, startx gets rid of the original error message, but I am presented with another. I will start a new question for the new error message.

I tried installing xorg, Doesn't that install everything or more than I need? Even with xorg, I got the same error.

I have a command line computer at home. In a remote location, I have an rdp server. I want to log into the rdp server from my command line computer and show a graphical desktop.

I just want to initiate an RDS session from the command-line install of Linux. How do I go about installing an xserver, I tried sudo aptitude install xserver-xorg-core, but it made no difference.
