comment What to do when a linux desktop freezes?
Problem: some modern keyboards do not have a SysRq key... (the one I'm typing from right now doesn't, for instance - although it does have "print screen", "scroll lock" and "pause/break")

Added solution based on @Marco 's comment (would be answer if question not closed)

comment Changing tmux .bash_profile behavior
I asked a similar question and was redirected here. @jw013 's comment gives an effective way of changing this weird behaviour of tmux from within tmux (rather than tinkering the .*profile files), but it requires a -g flag to be effective, as in set -g default-command zsh

@Marco Your last comment actually solved my problem perfectly. Thanks a lot! And sorry for the (mostly) duplicate question...

@jasonwryan I somehow missed that comment - and in fact it doesn't work as is, sadly, but Marco's variant in the comment above does exactly what I was looking for (the -g is fundamental, apparently - I'll add it to the original comment).

comment How to prevent tmux from reading .profile/.zprofile/.bash_profile
regarding duplicate question : I did find unix.stackexchange.com/questions/61719/… while searching before, but I don't want to test for tmux from within my .*profile scripts, but rather to change something on .tmux.conf so that shells in tmux don't read those scripts. Will edit question accordingly.

comment How to prevent tmux from reading .profile/.zprofile/.bash_profile
@Marco : then why do the shells within new tmux sessions, windows and panes behave like login shells, whereas the shells inside a new xterm don't and other subshells don't?

Just always use bc -l rather than plain bc, then never worry about scale.
