comment Why partition disks?
I should clarify, I meant in regard to the known system partitions. If you give /var/log 1GB and it gets larger than that, either your rotation needs to be upped or logshipping to a storage system with shorter local retention may be in order. Assuming you know what S/W you'll be running and how it utilizes those, others should be fine too. I tend to err on the side of caution w/ bare metal. If you know your app uses /var/lib/my_app, that should probably be considered for a separate partition in an LVM group for expansion. Definitely not arguing against LVM for servers by any means.
