Audio doesn't require GUI. I think most people who "write songs" use GUI apps to do that. What I have in mind is programming real-time audio. Using languages like C, Clojure, Csound, Supercollider, Chuck, etc. you don't need GUI. But as I said, I'm using i3 WM, so in some cases GUI is a good thing and I use it when it's good.

Everything you said is true, and I fell for that newbie idea like you said. There are other benefits to using Arch, too, though (the usual suspects), that I discovered only after using it awhile. Also, I've learned quite a lot in the process (at least I'm trying to learn--whether I'm actually learning something or just becoming more confused is an unresolved concern of mine).

@goldilocks I think the recommendation comes from the ability to choose not to have a desktop environment (or even a window manager, etc.)--things that do affect performance.

That seems like a great idea, but is there any way to do it similarly to the way I was trying to do it? Just curious--because using a tool like Gparted doesn't really help me understand this 'stuff' any better.

there's probably a better way to mitigate spam than presenting the user with a seemingly broken form.

Yes, that did it. I installed xterm and everything seems to work now. Thanks for your help!

I found this: wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xorg#Common_problems and checked the Xorg log; the mouse driver is missing, etc. (oops). But evdev is there and it seems the keyboard is there, so I'm still not sure about the tiles not being created

@ramonovski should I post it into the body of the question or is there some way to attach a file here?

@MichaelMrozek yes. Odd. I tried it several times, but using FF back button to re-submit the form. Re-submitting the form after the validation check seems to work for some reason.
