@sr_ thanks for wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/… I have read that already, but still in practice I want to see if it's just me or other people also find it to much trouble to choose all the packages and install everything by hand? I mean I know that I need to change a few things from a standard ubuntu distro but when I tried Arch I need to make all sorts of decisions that I didn't cared about that much.

I got it and it works perfectly, so basically you are suggesting that i replace rsync with unison? Which is a great suggestion. Still I need to mount my NFS mounts and then use unison to sync them, correct?

thanks, It looks like Unison is not being actively developed, do you use it or have you used it before?

I can SSH into B and can run programs on it, but don't have root access to it, or cannot install anything new on it, it's a rather standard Redhat (or fedora, or centos?!) box.

@amphetamachine thanks, while I am a bash user myself, it would be nice if you or others can add versions that would work on other shells as well.

I imagine konsole would be like screen it alerts once, while I need to receive an alert for every new line.

cool! That is creative, although in my case I am using the beep to be able to monitor a log file without looking at screen. And the actual beep may be better than a voice.

Thanks @Gilles , worked like a charm (on a mac too)! sed regexpt is a bit odd to my naive eyes.

@Nils, this sed Idea is brilliant but I don't know enough 'sed' to make it work, it looks like I cant capture newlines in the regexpt the usual way (that I am used to), I guess I need to tell sed dont interpret the incoming stream line by line.
