My thoughts
Me on launchpad PPA
Evidently one of my mini-apps was useful enough to make it on to Webupd8
Do you use/like that app? Maybe you want to help fund a cryptogram game

You don't need wine to run the ADT.

do-release-upgrade is the command for ubuntu. I can't say anything for Zorin.

comment dark image in Skype but without a problem in other apps
My guess is skype tries to initialize the device to zero, where guvc hits the proper ioctls to set the contrast/brightness etc to sane 50% defaults. This can be set at the device level with v4l2, but I'm not sure if you can do it from the command-line while skype is holding on to the device.

comment How can I force a script to use more resources?
valid point. changing niceness would be my first step though in case some other task is using resources. then it's moving the bottleneck around.

comment How to get IP Address using shell script?
The private address would still be given by the second script, it's just the outbound private address.

comment How to get IP Address using shell script?
Added a simple script to address the "just give me the outbound IP" problem.

Then it's just getting the local address from an open socket to Google. The way I read it, he wanted to enumerate over all interfaces and map IPs to interfaces as opposed to just opening a socket and looking for the local IP.

Thanks. Hopefully it helps you get a satisfactory answer.

comment Playing or converting .dv4 files in Linux
Do you have sample dv4 files for people that don't have them laying around to play with? Someone might give you an "I figured out how to do it" style answer if you did.

comment Ubuntu screen is small in VMware
It could have tried and failed. VMware tools fail to build right on older and brand new versions because they can't seem to dynamically track kernel headers very well and keep the kernel module building.

comment Best distro for using Google Docs on old computer
I can't seem to find it in the FAQ, but I'm pretty sure "best" questions are discouraged as opinion based and non-constructive.

comment Root access that can't change root password?
Nobody said "The use case is running a shell or an application that can run commands". That would make this answer wrong. Restarting services, editing with sudoedit, blah blah, are all related to using sudo properly and granting root or root-like permissions properly. We could all take a really dim view of it and say rewrite all the applications/services that have to run as root to run as non-priviledged users and tricky configurations... or we could expect that people use the sudoers functionality properly for non-interactive root permissions or intentionally limited root applications.

meh. this is boring. you're steering it instead of trying to help someone try and understand using a command. moving along.

comment Root access that can't change root password?
So you have to not grant permissions to interactive things or to run as a specific non-root user or group

Mac probably explicitly sets group permissions to 0 instead of respecting a more normal linux/unix umask.

comment Cross-Distro Compatibility- What's stopping it?
You can sort of. It just takes lots of tweaking. It's about different ways to manage what goes where, dependency chains, and other almost trivial but non-trivial things.

comment Cross-Distro Compatibility- What's stopping it?
You can get pacman in LFS, you just have to build and install it. The LFS docs have a section on building and installing the deb package management systems. Alien is a way to convert from rpm to deb that works sometimes. Not worth posting as an answer, but possibly informative.
