Great, didn't know VLC could do that trick. However, I don't see how a YouTube-only fix is a "workaround". There are plenty of other sites on the net that use flash videos and do not succumb to this method. An example near and dear to my heart: ncaa.com/march-madness-live

I think we are defining "persist" differently. Your proposed solution of echoing escape sequences will not persist in a new process (new terminal window). See my (accepted) answer below for a solution that does "persist" in the sense that it outlives its parent process.
