comment Downsides of umask 077?
@xenoterracide: sudo su - works fine. Ubuntu, like MacOSX, doesn't believe in a root you can just log into. Personally, I like having to say something like "Simon Says" for root commands most of the time.

comment How was the shift to 64 bits handled on Linux
There was a lot of debate in the Unix world, also. One of the arguments in favor of adding "long long" was that there was far too much code out there that assumed that "long" was 32 bits. (At least in the particular argument I got into on comp.std.c not too long before the C99 standard.)

comment Year 2038 problem
Speaking as somebody who was working on the issue at the time, Y2K fizzled because of a lot of work and planning beforehand. The damp squib perception was reinforced by all the exaggerated doomsaying in the media. I expect there to be a lot of planning and work done starting in 2035 or so, but if we're lucky we'll miss the media blitz.

comment Year 2038 problem
@Stephen: Not in the COBOL world, but there are fortunately few COBOL implementations on Unix/Linux.

comment Linux as a complete development platform?
You may want to remember that Apple only licenses MacOSX to run on Apple-brand computers. Or you could disregard that, depending on how you feel about shrink-wrap licenses.

comment Isn't less just more?
@Zaid: I could if I could get hold of one of the systems I was using fifteen years ago. It really doesn't matter any more.

comment How do you free up resources in Ubuntu?
@xenoterracide: I agree with you. I've had nothing to do with the Ubuntu proposal, because I think it's too specific, and I'd rather see Ubuntu questions here.

Funny, my /bin/bash shell does filename expansion with tab just fine.

comment Keep log file size fixed without logrotate
Is there any particular reason why you don't want to rotate the log, or use logrotate? Exactly what do you want to happen? Archive the old log at 1M and start a new one? The start of your question isn't quite compatible with the end.

comment Is it good to make a separate partition for /boot?
My Ubuntu 8.04 came from Dell with a /boot partition. It wasn't my choice. When I installed 10.04 fresh, it didn't try to create one.
