comment run x and getty on the same virtual console?
Instead of alt-tab to switch between programs, you could enable more workspaces (I have 10) and switch between them. And instead of switching to the console, you could try putty to localhost and check if the speed is acceptable.

comment How can the root file system be accessed to launch cryptsetup to allow access to the root file system?
You could decrypt it from an initrd. See crux.nu/Wiki/Cryptsetup

comment Single command taking two strings to extract string between them, like 'tr' (without expressions)
This can be done with simple pattern matching in bash itself . man bash (longer text without images).

comment Why isn't a semicolon accepted after then?
This looks like a problem in the shell to me. Replace the ; with a newline and it works. Otoh, omit the line with continue and you get the error. Read the source, Ben.

file says dynamic and ldd says not dynamic. It could be a binary from an old ld-so version. So try that strings file | grep ld-linux.

comment SSH to machines in new subnet - connection timeout
In your last route output the network 172.16.4.0 has the wrong netmask. I wonder why you're playing with netmasks like 255.255.252.0. There are 16 networks from 172.16.* to 172.31.*. If that's not enough, check out 10.*.

comment What does the command “$()” do in UNIX?
This $(echo something) was always written `echo something` before, and you easily overlook those backticks, especially on a cheap printer.

Before posting that as answer, do you have access to the AP and the internet now? How's you route -n looking now?

comment No MAC corresponding to IP in `arp` table: how to troubleshoot?
Shouldn't your your WISP either be a bridge and pass the arp-request to the real AP or be a router, thus replying "192.168.1.1 is at my mac". Can you try 192.168.0.254 (WISP's address, if you could reach this for setup) as gateway?. You need to add a route to that net too.

Can you add the output of route -n or netstat -rn?
