Can you give more info like: what is the size of the drives. When you plug at home both drives, what does the partition table tells you? what about the filesystem types?

I would say you might be pinging some completely different host. Have you tried to use traceroute to see? Have you checked the arp table and compared the MAC address? are you 100% sure they are connected on the same LAN? Have you checked if PC1 has firewall and drop ICMP packets?

In fact what you want is quite easy but complicated to achieve. Given the resources I would install two system exactly the same. Enable filesystem audit on the system that will have the files modified. Get the report from audit to identify what was added/modfiry/delete. Then compare these files with the other installed system.
