Do you create an own program? If yes and the program isn't too big and complex you can create a Makefile by hand. I think it's a simpliest solution. Or your program is Qt-based, you can use qmake.

I'm using freebsd too. Check this page: gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/… Did you 'chmod +x' to 40_custom? Please-please check wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/GRUB2#ISO_images In my case the config above works well. Did you try?
