comment Can not change brightness on Toshiba P855 - tried every distro already
Looks like there's simply no kernel / driver support for the specific model / chipset the P855 has.

comment How to set Bluetooth transmit power?
Update: I just received a note from a dongle maker stating this feature has been blocked due to restrictions opposed by the European CE marking.

comment How to install google chrome with apt-get?
@AndersonGreen I'd strongly advise you don't script: There is a reason for repositories and package managers, and years of development have been spent to achieve what you're suggesting. If you're deploying to multiple machines, run the installer on one machine once, then examine which repository it added to your /etc/apt/sources.list. On your other machines, add that entry, then run apt-get update and apt-get install google-chrome-stable

You can just double-click the .deb file, it is then opened & installed by Ubuntu's Software Center. If you want to do it on the commandline, run dpkg --install google-chrome-stable_current_i386.deb

comment How to set Bluetooth transmit power?
I also patched bccmd to support reading/setting the default & max tx powers (chapters 3.9 & 3.10 in eestud.kku.ac.th/~moo/datasheet/Bluetooth/BlueCore/…). I have been able to set those values to either 0 or 4, nothing else. Setting those values doesn't seem to have any practical impact on the dongle's range, though. Interestingly though hciconfig inqtpl now reports 4 if I set the values to 4 though...

Thanks for your answer, I just spent some time with bccmd. bccmd psget 0x0017 yields Can't execute command: No such device or address (6) with my CSR module, while 0x0001 works. bccmd pslist returns a rather short list of 7 commands that doesn't include 0x0017. Besides, bccmd buildname states odj_4hci_rom_vm_bt2.1_23e_0806121029_encr128. Maybe the firmware is just too old? Can I update it?

comment Compress old log file into single zip-linux
@gertvdijk if the single zip file is a requirement, I'd suggest using the prerotate/postrotate options to manually merge the input/output files.

@b00tbu9 logrotate does this for you. If you look at your /var/log dir and notice the *.#.gz files you'll see its results.
