comment When are spaces around the = sign forbidden?
In shells, don't ever use spaces around an equals. In anything that's not a shell, always use spaces. You can audit existing files using grep: 'grep "[^ ]=[^ ]" /etc/*' to find files with an = that doesn't have spaces.
