I'm a linux system administrator by day and by night. Among the many other things I do, I also run the climagic twitter/identica feed, I wrote the #1 ssh tutorial on the net, wrote num-utils and clide, which are available from various distributions of Linux.

I enjoy helping people out.

comment Is my default remote shell a trouble maker?
@Patrick You really should tell someone why its a bad idea instead of just saying its bad and stupid. People don't react well to being told their way is stupid and then close themselves off to your reasons for why the idea is stupid. So maybe you should explain why its a bad idea and educate everyone.

Is Ctrl+' used for something specific? Is it something that legacy systems had or something?

comment How to print keypresses in .inputrc format?
Well I just thought it was another option to try. I see the problem with Ctrl-' now. That's weird that the ;, ', , and . keys don't generate control sequences. Neither do the number keys. Never noticed that before.

comment Print odd-numbered lines, print even-numbered lines
There seem to be several documents online (including this one) that show up at the top of a search that state that NR % 2 gives you the even numbered lines, which is not correct, it gives you the odd because 1 % 2 = 1 = true, 2 % 2 = 0 = false.

I'd recommend tmux or dvtm over screen. They are more modern and cleaner replacements.

Note that there is a difference between alt-. and !$. !$ gets the last arg from the previous command you ran. Alt-. pulls the last arg from the previous history line.

comment Create alias to change directory and list contents
Its very important that if you do this that you put it in .bashrc instead of .bash_profile or .profile. .bashrc is only meant to be read when you have an interactive shell and thus your override won't get used by scripts that use 'cd'. Otherwise, you're probably going to break something.
