comment What is Debian's stance regarding GCJ and OpenJDK?
System administrators messing with alternatives might also want to use "update-alternatives -config java", which lists the available providers and then sets the symlink as per your selection.

comment Extracting nested zip files
atool's behaviour here doesn't differ significantly from unzip I'd say, it doesn't recursively extract ZIP files either.

comment Extracting nested zip files
I was not meaning to imply that it was off-topic here at all, I just wanted to justify why it's on-topic at StackOverflow.

comment Is there a way to see details of all the threads that a process has in Linux?
Note that there's also ps -Tp <pid>, since the grep is a bit fuzzy unless you make it more complicated.

comment How do I get sudo -u $user to use the users env?

comment sbopkg is not working with proxy
Note that environment variables are usually case-sensitive, so rsync_proxy is not the same as RSYNC_PROXY. To see if it works, I'd try connecting to a public rsync URL with rsync. Strictly for testing, try this: mkdir test ; rsync -avzH --delete msync.centos.org::CentOS test

comment Change directory without typing cd?
Yes, that's what one would naïvely expect - however, bash is smarter than us and doesn't even call command_not_found_handle for directories :(

comment Why do I need to hit enter to get my shell prompt after my init.d script completes?
I don't think it's that since it doesn't explain the caller's "ssh never returns" description.
