Your answer gets me closest to what I want as it helps me generate the help files in bulk, but celada's answer is the technically right answer to the question :( . When I finish what I have planned I will let you have a look at it.

I prefer a GUI oriented way of working, and I want to have the man pages in browser tabs with the relevant sections in view so I don't have to keep switching to the terminal and scrolling back and forth to view them. I have started developing a small graphics program for that as it is something I want to embed in other programs. Have you ever tried Smalltalk?

If you have more than one backtick command in the screenrc how do you select the output of the one you want to display, or are you restricted to just one backtick command?

I have tried this option, but it requires going back to the command line to generate a new html file if the relevant html file has not been created. I need something that presents me with a list of commands, and can generate and add a new command to the list if it doesn't already exist.

passing the output to grep command will be much easier for me. I tried your command and got no output. Can you explain it better?
