There was no string matching net in the rc.X list, but after following your suggestion this is what came up after searching lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 20 Dec 30 05:08 K07networking -> ../init.d/networking under rc.6, but that seems to be for stopping the network when the machine shuts down. Have the defaults for update-rc.d networking defaults changed in Debian 8?
