comment Is there bdiff (1) in Linux?
PS: Surprisingly, lfhex -c file1 file2 works well for me after setting View –> Editing base –> ASCII for both panes.

comment Is there bdiff (1) in Linux?
I managed to build bdiff from the Heirloom Toolchest after replacing /sbin/sh by /bin/sh in the makefiles. Now when I try to execute it in place, I get bdiff: Can not execute '/usr/5bin/diff'. Sorry, I do not want to install anything to /usr/5bin/. This is not a viable solution. The other options mentioned here do not work for me because I want to eyeball the differences as text.

comment Diffing two big text files
In my experience, the --speed-large-files option does not help if you do not have enough RAM. Also, pre-sorting is not helpful if you have a multi-line record structure you wish to preserve. The options referred to above (by @unhammer) are interesting, but the output from rdiff and bsdiff is rather binary. Installing bdiff from the Heirloom Toolbox looks like a dauning task (requires Heirloom devtools, extinct header files, …). Is it really worth the effort? Are there other alternatives?

comment Finding the sector size of a partition
This will not work for arbitrary image files. How should the kernel know about them?

If your version of file is less talkative by default, try adding the -k switch to get the kind of output shown in the answer – like this: file -k FILENAME.img.

comment Is there a linux equivalent of the Mac OS X command “textutil”?
unoconv is also in Debian. This is where Ubuntu got it from. So if you have apt-get, this will work on recent systems sudo apt-get install unoconv:
