Check the user permissions on the directory, for one thing. Make sure the user the target JVM is running as can write to that directory.

comment ZFS under Linux, does it work?
btrfs is way less mature than ZFS, which works excellently today, particularly on distributions like Nexenta which, with the Ubuntu/Debian style server-oriented userland, are more usable for those familiar with Linux (IMO).
