Try ssh -v -v -v to print lots of debugging messages.

Unison it is. Thanks!

Yes, I did mention that possibility, but I prefer not to use it. Moreover, while it would allow me to avoid using dangerous post-receive hooks, it would not simplify the procedure.

I'll try Unison. The last time I was using Dropbox it was messing up permissions.

rsync is what I am using now, and it sucks :-) Firstly, I cannot easily compare the changes -- if changes were done in parallel on both systems (not to mention: merge the changes). To find out which version of which file is newer on which system I have to rsync back and forth, ssh or sshfs mount and vimdiff the files.

I would be very happy if I was told why this question is off-topic to unix.stackexchange.com. I would never commit the same mistake again.

Maybe I don't understand something, but git pull is described as Fetch from and merge with another repository or a local branch.

Interesting. What does dpkg -l | grep samba-tools show?

Of course it does. As I wrote, I use that particular form for clarity.

comment How to boot a system in a second HD but runing the system in another one?
well, at least you could try and see what happens, and when it fails, ask a question here :-) There are plenty ways of finding out what is missing, including searching for files installed at the same time and differential file lists. From Maple web page: "A Maple 15 license file (license.dat) will be saved in the license folder of your Maple 15 installation"

Maybe if you told us what the programs are, someone could suggest an alternative way of installing them, so you would not have to fiddle with installation. Also, since both systems are 10.04, maybe you could copy the programs, their data and libraries, to /usr/local and see whether they work?

comment Web front-end to find/grep/ack
@manatwork: first, the permissions are not an issue, since we are talking "specific directory" and read only access. Also, to do it properly, yes, it would require more effort. But to do it properly, no one will build a web interface to command line tools for searching files in lieu of a database.

Hundreds of times. I guess everybody who ever used CGIs did that or a similar thing at one point or another. Also, it is pretty straightforward to get using a simple Perl script, if what you are looking for is simplicity, then maybe this will be easier than to install and configure something way more complex.

comment Does symlinking from Drive A to Drive B affect I/O on Drive A?
Well, every time that a home directory is accessed with its full path, there will be one lookup on the /dev/sda3.

Yes, you need to install this tool. I don't know what your system is, on Debian based systems you can just do sudo apt-get install gzrt

comment How to detect dos format files in git bash
I just thought of another thing. Do you have sed? Could you try sed -n '/\r$/p'? Does it show a different result for the CRLF terminated files?
