I am running Chromium Version 37 on Debian Wheezy and I am having the same problem. Googling around it seems people are having similar issues with Google apps in IE on Windows :) . No solution though.

This is a great answer that missed the point of my question, which was that I have tried all these suggestions I had already found online, and I was seeking inspiration for what to do next to get the sound working. Thanks for your response, as it has helped me clarify my question (see heavily edited OP).
