thanks for the awk FNR tip, but I also want to print the filename before sorted column. It needs storing "filename secondColumn" somehow. I think @Warwick's array suggestion will work.

How do find out which is the byte corresponding to offending character? I tried hexdump -C file command and got 0002b220 72 75 69 6e e6 0a 20 2d 2d 20 48 6f 72 61 63 65 |ruin.. -- Horace| as output.

thanks, i should have checked manpages. But unfortunately this doesn't work for the file I have uploaded in the linked question. file -k tmp still shows only ASCII Pascal program text as the only matching format whereas I expect it to match it with ASCII English Text.
