comment No sound in arch linux with xfce4
You don't need the asound.conf. And when speaker-test works, everything is fine as far as ALSA is concerned. Any problem you have is with whatever software you're using to play sounds, which you have kept a secret.

Are you using PulseAudio?

So is your user a member of the audio group? (This should have happened automatically.)

I don't know what those options are. Anyway, this question is about Elementary OS; ask a new question with proper information.

Your machine has (at least) three different audio outputs (analog, S/PDIF, HDMI). It's likely to use the wrong one unless you configure it ("System Settings", "Sound").

Which Jack implementation are you using? How have you configured it?

Nothing but a datasheet, if you're lucky.

comment Focusrite Scarlett on Linux input mapping?
"Doesn't work with PulseAudio" means exactly what is says; the problem appears to be that PA does not find a stereo configuration.

It does not work with PulseAudio, but otherwise should be seen as a 6+6 channels device.

All those bmaControls values are zero. Apparently, this device needs vendor-specific magic to be able to access the mixer controls.

No mixer controls at all? What is the output of lsusb -v for this device?

Doesn't this device have six output channels? Run speaker-test with -c 6. What is the output of amixer -c 1 contents?

Try running speaker-test. It's possible that PulseAudio does not find a stereo configuration.

Does it work if you run /usr/bin/speaker-test manually?

comment Setting up digital piano and computer with MIDI interface
Does your laptop have another USB port? (But if it doesn't work with another machine, it looks as if the USB/MIDI cable is broken.)

The USB/MIDI cable should show up in lsusb automatically. Try it on another port or with another machine; or try another device on this port.

Is that Chicony thing a web cam? If the device does not even show up with lsusb, you have a hardware problem. (Note: loading the driver would not affect lsusb, only the output of arecordmidi -l.)

That would be modprobe snd-usb-audio.
