not a real unix-freak, but have had some experiences. mostly an assembler programmer who worked on several highlevel languages like perl, php, forth, java, c#.

out of topic, you can extract important lines in a config file easily with grep: grep -v "#" httpd.conf | grep -v "^\s$". That first eliminates commented lines and then empty (with only whitespace between start and end of a line) ones.

Some systems do not allow to link across filesystems (and follow the link), for instance Helios Ethershare. So if you perhaps have a published tree with a shared folder a copy could be neccessary.

Sounds like this could be something for a named pipe. Named pipes are typical methods for inter-process-communication on Unix (and meanwhile on other systems too). For an introduction you may read en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Named_pipe
