I tried this, but unfortunately, it made the behavior I want to remove occur on the opening parenthesis in addition to the closing one. Additionally, I'm fairly new to Elisp, but I've seen people advise (no pun intended) against using defadvice. Would its use be justified in this instance?

I'm sorry, but I don't fully understand your answer. Does this method entail modifying paren.el?

That is the behavior I want to disable, the one circumstance you're referring to. I'm really sorry for not being clearer, I was just trying to compare it with bash not inserting anything on blank input.

Nope, I'm not using oh-my-zsh. I think I should have just focused on one thing in my question instead of addressing what I'm going for overall. In bash, if there are no potential completions, nothing happens, but in zsh, a tab character is inserted. I just want to disable zsh's tab character insert when there are no completions.

I used that configure Zsh initially. It looks like the tab behavior itself might be related to "zstyle ':completion:*'" under "Command Completion", but I can't figure out what I exactly need, or if this is the correct way about it.

comment Can I Change Caps Lock to Hyper/Additional Modifier?
Ok I have everything working now! It turned out to be the console Emacs' inability to detect Super and Hyper (at least with urxvt) that was throwing me off. Thanks so much!
