I got confuse how to use case here in my script. I am not that much into linux learning daily few things. If possible, can you provide an example how will my script will look like with this logic? And you are right that's how I will determine the failover if scp returns non-zero status.

@derbert, I have edited the question to remove DC1, DC2 and DC3 stuff. i added real prefix name now just not to add more confusion.

oops, I should have mentioned this. In general my datacenter prefix is not like dc1, dc2 and dc3. They are real short forms, like phx, slc and lvs datacenter. For simplicity I made like that.

Still trying to understand this, sorry if I missed any basic stuff : if it thinks that pid is 4000 which will still be running right? then why it starts 4001 then?

aahh.. Let me try this out. But doesn't upstart internally checks the pid of the process and make sure if it is not running then start it back again?
