Yes I have a sysctl command as part of the busybox binary. I can see an option to read from a specified file of which /etc/sysctl.conf is the default. Perhaps I just need to create this file and input the lines you suggest, then run sysctl ? You were right about it not being IPv6 problem though - I simply had incorrect information from the network administrator.

@MichaelKjörling OK if I don't get an answer within a few days I will write a separate question. I simply chose ext3 as pretty much every book I have read on embedded linux says its the best choice for emnbedded devices working with compact flash drives in IDE mode.

@MichaelKjörling The file format is completely fixed for backward compatibility. This application used to run on DOS but we are attempting some modernisation by using linux instead. I had (perhaps naively) assumed that ext3 file system would eradicate the possibility of losing data.
