comment Debian and system clock change?
It's actually a 72 bit number (if I am reading this right). 9 registers of 1 byte each (I don't think they are signed values either): wiki.osdev.org/CMOS#Getting_Current_Date_and_Time_from_RTC So it's not that it runs out of space ... I think it gets reset to whatever the manufacturer wants.

@moshbear if Unix time is a 32 bit number how many bits are in the CMOS? And how does it "upscale" from a lower value?

comment Why does bash variable expansion retain quotes?
It's also important to note that quotes are evaluated differently; double quotes (") allow evaluation of the enclosed string, single quotes (') print the string as a literal. Example: "$(ls)" and '$(ls)'. This is the reason why quotes appear in original questions examples.

"Variables hold data, functions hold code." Unless it's a lisp.

comment Arch Linux doesn't connect to a wireless network
What security settings are you using for your connection? WEP? WPA? WPA2? Have you tried turning these off to make sure it's an issue with wicd?
