@mikeserv I don't get what you're trying to say about || continue. Important thing here is that continue will preserve the value of $? for when it might drop out of the loop. The if construct discards it.

Possible answer to item 1: Use the linux kernel ftrace facility as promoted by Brendan Gregg. I will investigate this later, if the issue surfaces again.

tl;dr: read is a builtin and skips the overhead and bookkeeping involved with starting a new process.

comment echo test | stty -echo -> stty: standard input: Inappropriate ioctl for device
system( qw( stty -echo < /dev/tty) ); is a possible workaround, but the script needs to restore the echo afterwards. Using expect may be a better fit.
