@mikeserv I don't get what you're trying to say about || continue. Important thing here is that continue will preserve the value of $? for when it might drop out of the loop. The if construct discards it.

Possible answer to item 1: Use the linux kernel ftrace facility as promoted by Brendan Gregg. I will investigate this later, if the issue surfaces again.
