comment How do I configure a Trackpoint, so middle-click scrolling is not misinterpreted as a middle-click paste?
@jumpnett: thanks, I tried that and it did not work. Can you think of a reason why that method would not work? (The xorg.conf method does work, but it is fairly outdated.)

comment Simplest way to add a data lookup to an HTML website on Ubuntu?
If nginx makes it more complicated, I'll switch. CGI might be the way to go...

It will be low traffic. I don't have a preferred language except that I don't want a large framework or a lot of layers to configure. I'll be learning (or relearning) any language that I use. Yes, KISS. Need a recommendation for a language that will be suitable.

Thanks. That did it. (I'm not sure why, but I thought installing xbindkeys was sufficient. I guess I just needed xvkbd, and not xbindkeys.)

comment Klipper: how to paste current clipboard contents as plain text with a single shortcut action?
Thanks again. I have it all set up and all the pieces of it seem to work except the last part -- invoking <Ctrl>+v to paste it. I have to use my shortcut and then follow it with <Ctrl>+v. Might I need to change the double quotes to single or drop the two backslashes?

Thank you for that, but it seems there should be a way to do this with klipper...

comment Printer drivers
I ended up sticking with HP. I bought an HP x551dw and it is the most impressive printer I have ever owned (for my specific requirements, obviously). I liked it so much I bought a second one a week later.

@StephenKitt - thanks for the recommendation. I will check that printer out. Probably off topic here, but I'm also hearing that the newest generation of inkjet printers are fast and low cost compared to color lasers.

comment Command line for converting .SWF to animated GIF
Thank you again. I did manage to uncompress the SWF file, but then ffmpeg gave another error (could not find codec parameters). I'm going to take you up on your offer to give it a go. We'll send you the SWF file. Thanks!

Thanks. Very helpful. My error is [swf @ 0x207f6c0] Compressed SWF format not supported. It looks like I need cws2fws but it doesn't appear to be available in the Ubuntu 12.04 repos.

comment ideal btrfs storage scheme to incorporate external USB HDD as backup media
I think RAID1 with an external USB drive will slow my system down too much (so I've been told). Maybe the send/receive script with hourly snapshots is about as close as I can get to the ideal...

@mikeserv - thanks and I look forward to any suggestions or tutorials you come up with. I have been using btrfs for several years and it has been great. But I have not tapped into any of its advanced features. I think all the warnings about it not being ready for serious use made me hesitant to explore anything other than the basic functions.

@mikeserv - I think you have put me on the right track. Thanks. Now I need to find a send/receive tutorial. The man pages are not enough. I believe I also need to investigate snapper and buttersink (pypi.python.org/pypi/buttersink/0.5)
