comment Installing XRDP on Cent OS 6.5
I found the following very helpful when troubleshooting, I could follow the errors in the config more easily. note that the vncserver session isn't needed, xrdp will launch its own using its own session manager: # xrdp --nodaemon& sleep 2; xrdp-sesman --nodaemon

comment Tools for Monitoring Steal Time (st)
The root cause of this one turned out to be that the ISP had the VM incorrectly configured. The guest was being told it had more cores than it actually did. This seemed to cause havoc with the scheduling. The ISP couldn't provide intelligent tech support, but we were able to "prove" the problem by disabling odd-numbered cores in /proc. Never a problem since.

comment Recovering data from a damaged hard-drive: the “freezer trick”
The manufacturers change chips on boards and often don't update their model numbers. Consider too shelving the drive until you find the parts or have the money to deal with it. Don't shelve it tooo long though, the parts get harder and harder to find.

Only if you have an identical board. IMHO, if you have a second identical disk, you're probably a professional, or you care enough about the data that you should send it to one.

It looks like the lack of multidimensionality is going to cause such a performance and complexity issue, that I'm going to have to shift over to Perl or Python. Unfortunatley, I can't address this by installing gawk.

I was leaving out the question about ordering to keep this question short. You answered both questions even though I only asked one :-)

I haven't encountered a case insensitive shell environment before. Thanks for the help... I'm going to have to re-think some of my shell-scripts now :-(
