high numbers for all four disks. i haven't tried the setup again because i want to have western digital swap them. thanks for pointing me in the direction of smartctl -x -- i was only relying on the monitoring daemon to tell me something useful.

Thanks for your reply. smartctl -x is showing high values for 0x0005 (R_ERR response for non-data FIS) and 0x0006 (R_ERR response for device-to-host non-data FIS)
