comment What is the benefit of compiling your own linux kernel?
Gr. stupid timeout... I agree, It is worth it only for the knowledge gained. BUT- Sometimes there are performance gains. Going from 2.6.32 on stock debian stable to 3.0 or greater COULD show show gain. Consider that the 2.x kernel was built to support everything, while a custom built kernel will most likely not. My experience on debian stable has proven to me that it's worth it for the performance gains. But other distros might not feel any different at all. So.. yes and no. Plus it's just great to know you lovingly hand crafted the innermost part of your OS. =D
