comment Bash displays international characters as escape sequences
Thanks! Wow, this is ridiculous. set output-meta on # comment turns it off, while omitting or commenting out the line turns it on (as it is the default in /etc/inputrc).

comment Why are rules not combining in an ssh config file?
In your example, how is "user2" ever set? I thought the first obtained value for a host is used, so every host will match the first block and have "user1" set?

comment Use keyboard-interactive authentication when piping ssh output to other command
@StephaneChazelas: Thanks, your comments helped me figure out the answer! If I run ssh myserver cat remote-file alone it works as expected, echo test > /dev/tty works as well. However, running with set -x spits out a bunch of junk. It turns out that I had customized my prompt to set the window title to the currently running command. That created a subshell for every command, and somehow messed this up. When I commented out the offending lines, it worked.

comment ls behaves differently under strace
Incredible, no matter how obscure a problem I have, I can be sure that someone else encountered it before, at that there's likely a solution here. Thanks!

comment 'Distribution' to install in home directory (on older Linux)
Yes, but with the added requirement of bringing current software to an old OS.
