if my desktop is 1024x600 I cannot have a bigger screen that I can pan? So must I increase the desktop into a bigger panning mode? or is framebuffer some kind of different environment which can be made bigger?

comment 'iwlist' -> interface doesn't support scanning (Ubuntu LTS 10.04)
@jordanm, this is a bit embarrassing but you are right that root was a necessary condition which I did not try. Could you put this as an answer?

@Karlson, I have not actually done this before, so I am unsure how to progress? Could you post an answer of such a set of actions to perform or investigation. Would I need to sniff the wire with wireshark and search for what type of information?

@pradeepchhetri, I am not sure if there is a dhcp server for the wired LAN. Now that I think of it, probably not, I agree. I am in a house with a router and LAN cable, so I assume that this connects directly to the ISP without a NAT machine. What kind of static ip address should I give? Why wouldn't it be set automatically? What would the static ip correspond to?

I have the k3770 modem from Vodafone. After taking all the steps you wrote, I ran sakis3g, and it said that it connected! I used the option of old PAYG, which may not have been the correct option, but when I tried this again the same luck did not repeat. I also installed "modemmanager" I don't know if that was critical or not but after some fumbling around in the network manager an entry appeared for the Vodafone modem connection. It does not connect me but it is at least there.
